I’ve Been Re-Kindled!

When I was a kid I devoured books (that’s me in the photo below). I had a hard time fitting in with my peers, and books became everything to me – an escape from reality that I so desperately needed. I was also a stubborn and thick-headed kid, and needed discipline often. The worst consequence I remember receiving from my parents was the time I was grounded from books. It was horrible. I don’t remember what I did, but I’m pretty confident I never did it again.

I continued to read throughout my middle and high school years, although required reading lists meant that most of my reading time was taken up by books I was told to read instead of books of my choosing. And some of them I hated – I thought I was going to die trying to finish A Tale of Two Cities. College kept me busy earning a degree, and then it was marriage, teaching, and kids, all of which ate up any free time I had for reading. Although, unsurprisingly, I did become quite an expertΒ in the world of Children’s Literature. πŸ™‚

photoJay bought aΒ Kindle for me as a Mother’s Day gift one year, and, corny as it sounds, a spark was lit again. Β I started reading again, although very sporadically. My reading list at the timeΒ included:

  • anything by Mary Higgins Clark
  • The Complete Sherlock Holmes
  • The Sword of Shannara Trilogy
  • The Voyage of the Jerle Shanarra Trilogy
  • Imponderables
  • UR (A Stephen King novella about a Kindle)

Screen Shot 2014-04-11 at 1.01.01 PMThe problem was, everything I was reading (with the exception of Mary Higgins Clark) was put-downable. I still didn’t have the constant urge to read… to see what happens next… or even just to get to the end. After a few pages I’d just pass out. I’ve been reading the Sherlock Holmes collection for the past fewΒ years, and at this rate I’ll probably still be working through it 20 years from now.

And then, The Hunger Games. Ahhhhhh, Peeta. ❀ Swoon. ❀ My best friend Sanne (also a Peeta junkie) and I hit the theater to check out the movie, neither of us aware that it was based off of a book trilogy. We were instantly intrigued, bought all 3 books immediately, and finished reading the entire trilogyΒ in less than a week. Thus began our complete obsession for the series, but that’s another post for another day.

1238092_10200472529767780_1814813094_nAnd just like that, it was back! My love for reading had been refueled. Β Reignited. Β Re-kindled. I seriously could not put thoseΒ books down – it was ridiculous how eager I was to keep going. Julia was just a few months old, so I’d lie on the floor with her and read while she sucked on a toy or my toe or something. Β I read at stop lights. Β In the bathroom. Β In the car while JayΒ drove us the whole 5 minutes to church. Β I’d found the un-put-downable book! Β And the release of Catching Fire in the theaters last November prompted me to read the whole series over – somethingΒ I plan to do again when Mockingjay Part 1 comes out later this year.

I’m currently in the last book of the Divergent Series, Allegiant. While it’s nowhere near as good as The Hunger Games series (in my opinion), it’s definitely got me hooked. And once again I’m having a hard time putting down my Kindle. Β I still fall asleep if I read before bed, but at least I can usually make it through a chapter now instead of just a few pages. I’ve even got a lineup of books I’m ready to read once I finish this one!

  • The Giver (one of my all-time favs, about to be released as a film later this year)
  • The Fault in Our Stars (recommended by my bestie)
  • The Maze Runner Series (super excited about these – also coming out on film)!
  • Gone Series (If the first one is any good)

I love being a reader again, and I love that my Kindle is finally being used daily – although sometimes in lieu of things like laundry… or dusting… or eating. Β But who cares about those things when you’ve got an addicting novel? πŸ™‚

  1. Ok, you know I LOVE this post. Not just because you mentioned Peeta… 😍❀️ This post is totally me. I used to love reading as a kid, didn’t love a lot of the books I was made to read in High School (in Dutch, English, French and German… Arghhhhh! 😱) but enjoyed reading fun novels again a few years later (anything by Sophie Kinsella, Summer Sisters by Judy Blume, The Nanny Diaries…). Once my boys were born though I barely ever read anymore though. Until The Hunger Games!!!! πŸ™Œ
I’m SO excited for us to keep enjoying all these awesome books and then going to see the movies and sitting at Starbucks discussing it all.
Love you so much girlie!! 😘

    1. I could hardly handle some of the required reading in my own language – I still don’t know how you managed to do it in 4! It’s been way fun having our own book club – love you too! πŸ˜‰

  2. I loved this post. Not a big surprise though, I’m always excited when I see your blog in my inbox.
I didn’t really love to read when I was a kid. That bug didn’t hit me until I became an adult. Now I love to read and am especially thrilled when I find interest in a series!! My kindle is by far my favorite possession. I don’t need the Kindle Fire and as much as I enjoy my IPad, I don’t like to read on it. I waited to see Hunger Games until it came on Netflix, but instantly fell in love with the story. I quickly started reading the books (which lucky for me I already had them on my Kindle because my teenage son had read them) and right now, they are among my favorites πŸ™‚

    1. I love my Kindle! I have the 2nd Generation (I think), and it’s starting to show it’s age a bit, so I’m thinking of getting a new one. I have ZERO interest in reading on Jay’s iPad (it’s never consistently here anyway), and I don’t want any fancy-schmancy eReader that does everything an iPad does. I want it to feel as much like a book as it can without actually BEING a book. LOL Happy to hear you’re a fan of the HG books too! Miss you! πŸ™‚

  3. Love, love, love this post! I didn’t read much after college because I did sooooo much of it (English major). I loved both the “Hunger Games” and “Divergent” trilogies. Have you read the “Harry Potter” books? (I can’t remember.) I’ll have to try some of the other books you listed. I’m stuck on Jane Austen books right now. You know my love for almost all things British! πŸ˜‰

    1. Haha! I always think of you when I pick up any book – I still remember you lugging that backpack with 8 or 9 books in it – that you were reading all at once! Emily reads just like you, you know! I haven’t read all the Harry Potters, I got about halfway through the 4th book when the movie came out and gave up – I liked the movies better. πŸ˜€ I’ve read a couple of Jane Austen’s, but I seem to be on an adventure kick lately! πŸ™‚

  4. Yet another thing we have in common it seems….books! I could talk endlessly about them. If you like suspense / thrillers then you have got to check out a series of books by a two-man author team. Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child write an incredible series about Special Agent Pendergast – he works for the FBI, but certainly is not above doing things his own way when necessary. The books are hard to put down. The very first one in the series is called RELIC. You don’t have to start with that one if you don’t want to, but some of them do need to be read in order as sometimes the storylines cross over into more than one book. The absolute best book in the series, in my opinion, is Cabinet of Curiosities. It will keep you up late at night and on the edge of your seat for sure. It’s amazing!
